In recent times, the empowerment of the girl child has become one of most talked about topics on the internet. It has grown from being thoughts/ideas, into feminism advocacy. According to Wikipedia, “female empowerment may be defined in several ways, including accepting women’s viewpoints, making an effort to seek them and raising the status of women through education,
awareness, literacy, and training”.
In time past, several actions had been taken to lift the intensity of gender stereotypes. These actions include; fight against child marriage, and sending the girl child to school. In recent times however, the fight has evolved and taken a new turn. The latest demands are:
-Involving women in politics and power
-Engaging women in “male dominated jobs”
-Equal opportunities, etc
At True Identity, we believe in changing the narrative one child at a time. The passion of empowering the girl child is evident in our activities. The most prominent being; our Women Read Academy Program which is a community of young women equipped weekly with teachings on values, empathy, communication, social and financial advice etc to help them excel and to challenge the status quo in whatever sphere of life they find themselves. As individuals, there’s so much we can do to make a difference. It doesn’t take a seat at the table of influence to make a change. It starts with the simplest things. So when next you see a woman, be sure to do the following:
-Boost her self-esteem
-Shut down the negativity
-Give job opportunities
-Encourage younger women to solve issues on their own
-Be a good role model
-Fan the flames of creativity and leadership in her.
-Support a child in school. Either by providing study materials or fees.
